Three things to check
WARDOGS separates the weapon’s chambering, the ammunition type and the magazine or loading system. A matching caliber is necessary, but it does not prove that every magazine fits every weapon. Build ammunition from the selected weapon’s current vendor screen rather than shopping from memory.
For every primary weapon, confirm: the caliber, a supported magazine, the ammunition loaded into that magazine and enough backpack space for a ready spare.
Start from the weapon
The current documented examples use different families:
| Weapon | Recorded caliber | Magazine path |
|---|---|---|
| AK74 | 5.45×39 mm | AK74-family magazines |
| M4 | 5.56×45 mm | Supported STANAG/M4 magazines |
| SKS | 7.62×39 mm | Internal or extended SKS record |
| MP5 | 9×19 mm | MP5 magazine family |
Real-world compatibility is not evidence of in-game compatibility. Use the items shown under the weapon in the current client.
Loaded magazines versus loose rounds
Pressing reload swaps to another compatible magazine and preserves the amount already inside it. Loose ammunition in a backpack is a supply for refilling magazines; it is not automatically a ready reload. An empty magazine remains empty until the player uses the current inventory interaction to replenish it.
Prepare at the vendor: place the first ready magazine in the weapon, put spares in storage and add loose ammunition only after confirming the caliber. During downtime, inspect magazine counts before returning to the objective.
Special ammunition and unlocks
Recorded ammo families include standard/FMJ, flesh-damage/HP and armor-piercing/AP variants, sometimes with tracer versions. Their effect depends on the current build, target protection, distance and hit location. The official Season 1 notes moved selected 5.56 and 7.62×54 AP access within Career progression, proving that availability can change between versions.
This guide does not turn old damage numbers into a universal best-ammo claim. Read the in-game description and test a current item before comparing penetration or time to kill.
Budget for replenishment
Count ready magazines and loose rounds in the full kit cost. Extra magazines improve immediate reload capacity but consume more cash and storage; loose ammunition is compact replenishment but needs time and a safe inventory interaction. Carry enough for the planned task without replacing medical equipment or overloading the kit.
Logistics ammunition delivered to an emplacement or FOB is a different resource from infantry rounds. The building guide covers that supply type.
Data version and sources
Core loadout mechanics come from the official WARDOGS Steam overview; named AP unlock moves come from the Season 1 changelog. Caliber and magazine families are versioned records reviewed on September 16, 2026 and require a current vendor check.

Official changes use first-party announcements. Item fields without a current official table remain labeled as dated gameplay records until they can be checked in the public client.
